Regional Teamwork Works!

Centre Region Parks and Recreation (CRPR) is an agency of the Centre Region Council of Governments, a voluntary association of municipalities working together for the betterment of the region. The Borough of State College and the Townships of College, Ferguson, Harris and Patton participate and contribute shared-funding in support of regional year-round recreation and municipal park operations. Rather than each municipality operating their own Parks & Recreation Department, CRPR has been designated as their official municipal recreation and park agency for over 40 years. The organization has been successful as a result of the municipal teamwork!

Each municipality acquires and develops their park sites; maintenance and programs are then jointly-funded and provided by CRPR. For 2008, CRPR will maintain recreation areas totaling 778 acres at 51 sites, and provides the region's 77,000 residents with special events and programs in parks, school district facilities, and at other sites. Seven facilities, however, are capitalized and operated by the Centre Region Parks and Recreation Board / Centre Regional Recreation Authority (CRRA) on a regional basis with prorated contributions from the five participating municipalities:• Centre Region Senior Citizen Center • Park Forest Community Swimming Pool • Millbrook Marsh Nature Center • Wm. L. Welch Community Swimming Pool • 5 ballfields leased at 3 SCASD elementary schools

The five participating municipalities are making outstanding progress in cooperation for building larger parks for the future - which is new ground for the COG.  During 2006 the five participating municipalities developed and approved an agreement to jointly fund the phased planning and development of these two parks, which have been designated primarily for active recreation activities.

Oak Hall Parklands (68-acres adjacent to the Oak Hall interchange of the bypass) was purchased from Penn State University in 2005 with the assistance of a $300,000 state grant. With the assistance of another PA DCNR grant and municipal cooperation, the COG recently selected the firm of Pashek Associates to coordinate the development of a Master Site Plan for that site.

Whitehall Road Parklands (75-acres near the intersection of Blue Course Drive and Whitehall Road) is scheduled to be purchased from Penn State University within the next 60 days with the assistance of a state grant The parklands will be owned jointly by COG and Ferguson Township.

With regard to the renewal of the two community swimming pools:

• The five municipalities recently finalized a shared funding plan for the two pool renewals totaling $7.9 million. State funding assistance is an important component of that plan.

• The Park Forest Pool Renewal project will go to bid in April; construction is scheduled to begin on August 4, which means the pool will close early this summer in order to reopen in May 2009.

• The Master Site Plan for the renewal of Wm. L. Welch Community Swimming Pool is almost complete pending final discussions with State College Area School District. When finalized, construction is proposed to begin in early-August 2009.

Community participation remains a vital part of CRPR operations and planning. All residents are invited to visit the CRPR website and then participate in both our activities and the planning for new facilities.

MILLBROOK MARSH NATURE CENTER - THE BUILDING FUND CAMPAIGN

WANTED: NATURE LOVERS!  Millbrook Marsh Nature Center is beautiful year-round! We are dedicated to building a facility to provide education programs for the community in all seasons. Nature Center volunteers have raised over $1,000,000 during the Building Fund Campaign toward reaching the local goal of $1.25 million to build and operate an innovative and creative environmental education center on a year-round basis. WE NEED YOUR HELP! Please join us to support this special community gem in the heart of the Centre Region! That's MY Millbrook Marsh... make it yours too!

"My great-uncle said - Go see the oaks, where he spent many hours of his life. What secrets did my great-uncle tell the Oaks? He didn't know that one day I would look up into the oak branches and hope my grandson will appreciate the family memories the marsh holds...."
— Holly Fritchman, MMNC Advisory Committee Member

"It is quiet in the middle of madness… the wild in the midst of the tame. Millbrook opens up so much for the people who spend time there... it is experience… it is the chance to stop and look at the world around you and to see the "balance" between it all.
— Phil Gardner, MMNC Program Leader

"My 4-year-old daughter loves exploring the boardwalk and attending events "at the barn." Witnessing the joy that children experience and the discoveries they make at Millbrook Marsh has been very rewarding for me."
— Robin Bang, MMNC Volunteer

The Centre Region "Gifts-For-Parks" Program

Wondering how you can help improve the Centre Region? Join the Gifts-For-Parks initiative! Donations of all shapes and sizes help CRPR provide important "extras" that create a more enjoyable leisure experience for all area residents. Over the past several years, this successful program has generated tremendous community support from individuals, groups, and organizations throughout the Centre Region.

Centre Region "Park Partners"   A "Branch" of the Gifts-For-Parks Program

The Centre Region "Park Partners" Program is an initiative by Centre Region Parks & Recreation (CRPR) started in 1998 that encourages public and private groups to assist with various improvements to municipal park areas. Volunteer projects have provided many valuable improvements to our park areas over the years such as the PNC-United Way "Day of Caring," Park Partner Day each Spring, special projects and cleanups by scouting, community, and civic groups. Volunteerism is thriving in the Centre Region! Our thanks to the current CRPR Park Partners. For more information about becoming a "Park Partner," or to view a list of the 20 current partners, please visit the CRPR website.

CRPR Remembrance Trees . . .
Another "Branch" of the Gifts-For-Parks Program

The CRPR Remembrance Tree Program has enabled donors to honor special people in their lives and our community by adding shade trees in Centre Region parks and recreation areas each Fall and Spring. Since the Remembrance Tree Program began, funds for 309 trees have been donated for planting in Centre Region municipal parks. A few occasions to mark with Remembrance Trees are:• Birthdays • Personal Success • Community Service • Weddings • Anniversaries • Memorializing a Loved One. Donors may choose their trees from lists created for each park. Each tree requires a donation of $240 or $350 depending on the size. The donation deadline for the Fall season is Sept. 15. It's easy to join this award-winning program! Please call CRPR (231-3071) for a free brochure.
