2. COMMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC: None
3. APPROVAL OF THE MEETING SUMMARY from 19 Jul 06 (No August Meeting): Motion by Bob Ayer, Second by Kathy Matason. Motion approved.
4. REPORTS & UPDATES:
• Operational Update: Molly
Programs: Molly shared that Fall Programs are in progress. With regard to Fall Group Programs, staff applicants
are very low and Group Program scheduled requests are low also. Molly is looking at the feasibility of holding those group
programs and how to staff them when they are scheduled.
Special events: The Spring Creek Day event was held on Sunday, September 17th at MMNC and was well attended.
The Historic Harvest Festival, planned for Nov 8th, will be planned again this year by a group of RPTM students. Molly will
begin weekly meetings with the students.
Rentals: Molly reported that rentals are low, as they have been throughout the season, and asked the group to
brainstorm ways to encourage Penn State groups to use the barn. Holly suggested contacting staff assistant to the department
heads to get together at the barn and learn about the rental opportunity. Also we can contact the conferences and institutes
department, as well as the PSU Office Professionals group.
• Slab Cabin Run: PSU Stream Improvement Devices: Molly
Molly reported the stream construction has begun and weekly meetings are planned to keep in contact with the contractor
and the other members of the planning team. The construction must be finished by October 15th in the stream, based on
regulations from the PA Fish & Boat Commission. Terry Rightnour will visit the Advisory Committee with an update when
the project is complete.
• Wetlab Outfitting Plans prepared by Alan Popovich and approved by CRRA: Molly
Molly shared copies of the Wetlab plans and explained various aspects of the project, such as the wall sink and counter units,
the bookcases for storage, and the arrangment of the lighting.
• Thompson Woods Subcommittee: Molly
The subcommittee must meet and respond to a June letter from the Smith Partnership about the preserve. A meeting is
scheduled for October. The committee, after discussion, agreed that interactions with the Smith Partnership should include
a thank you for their input and not that it will be taken under advisement. This response to Smiths should be after the
meeting, rather than invite them to the meeting.
• Capital Campaign Updates (as presented to COG on 28 Aug 06): Rick Marboe
As of last week, the total was $521,000 between private and grants/foundations. The business division has begun, Diane and
Molly are visiting, there is much paperwork to be done before these requests are official. Letters are out to other potential
donors, major donors still need to be contacted. Rick reviewed the COG presentation for the group. The public campaign
was also discussed, with ideas such as visual signs announcing the campaign, mailing to regular visitors, displays at the barn,
CNET spot with the happy valley song. The Committee needs to decide what other things are needed to advertise to the
public. Each partner group will be asked to provide / develop an endorsement letter that can be used in our grant application
efforts. A line may be added to the Leisure Guide registration forms to say “Donation of extra $5 to the campaign” when
participants are scheduling.5. BUSINESS ITEMS
• MMNC 10-Year Anniversary Event Planning Committee (2007): Molly & Holly
Molly and Holly are still recruiting members of this small planning committee to join the efforts!
